Stephen Chun Kit, Cheng was born in Hong Kong. He started playing piano at the age of 8. He enjoys different genres of music and is a passionate and experienced piano teacher and musician. With more than 6 years’ experience as a piano teacher and over 10 years of professional training covering the area of piano performance, conducting, composition, and chamber and orchestral performance, he understands how to create an effective environment as a mentor. He had teachers and trainings from different backgrounds and schools of piano playing-- traditional Russian school playing, advocated by Heinrich Neuhaus, the Taubman Approach, invented by a celebrated pianist Dorothy Taubman, and alignment, which is promoted by various pianists.
He has a wide-range of performance experience. He was part of Newcastle University Salsa Band, and a clarinetist in various orchestras such as Millenium Youth Orchestra and Newcastle University Symphony Orchestra etc. He participated various summer music festivals in Newcastle and performed in different institutes, churches and university halls such as Princeton University Auditorium Hall, St. Mary the Virgin Monekn Hadley, Mining Institute etc.
He was fortunate to perform Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, and conduct Tchaikovsky Symphony Symphony No. 5 whilst studying in Newcastle. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music (major in piano performance) at Newcastle University in 2016, PGDip in piano performance and MMus Advanced Musical Studies (Composition) at Royal Holloway, University of London. He studied piano with Carol Yu, a celebrated pianist, and conducting with Ho-Man Choi, ex-resident conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the music director of pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong, when he was in Hong Kong. He had lessons and masterclasses with various teachers in the UK and the US, including Ian Hobson, Stephen Savage, Martin Roscoe, David Murray, Sarah Beth Briggs, Mary Moran, and Therese Milanovic. And he is now a student of a celebrated British pianist Christine Croshaw. He aims to be an inspirational piano teacher, a professional pianist, and an experimental composer. He will soon launch his personal website and a collaboration platform on sonic arts, contemporary composition, and film composition.
